Airbnb Gift Cards and Crypto in Pennsylvania

Redeemed gift card value becomes Airbnb credit on your account and is applied automatically to eligible bookings. It generally covers the nightly rate, cleaning fee, service fee and taxes — the full booking total in most cases.

Several things to know. Credit is applied to the booking at the time of reservation, not at check-in, so it needs to be on the account before you book. If a booking is cancelled, refunded credit typically returns as credit rather than as cash. And credit generally cannot be used for Airbnb Experiences in every market, nor transferred between accounts.

One structural note: gift credit is linked to the currency of your account. A US card is for a USD account. If your account is set to another currency the code will not apply, and Airbnb does not convert between them.

Philadelphia and Pittsburgh both have substantial urban inventory. Note that both cities regulate short-term rentals, and licensing requirements affect which listings are legitimate — book through the platform rather than off-platform arrangements.

Tax: this is a disposal like every other gift card purchase with crypto. Because the amounts are larger, the gain calculation matters more. The related question from the other side: can Airbnb hosts be paid in cryptocurrency? Not through Airbnb in the United States — host payouts go to a bank account or supported payout method. Converting payouts to crypto afterwards is a separate transaction through a licensed exchange.

For Pennsylvania hosts, short-term rental income is taxable income, and Pennsylvania and many municipalities also impose hotel or occupancy taxes on short-term stays. Converting that income to cryptocurrency later creates a separate capital gains position. Keep the rental income and the crypto disposal as distinct records.

The Credit CARD Act of 2009 prohibits expiry sooner than five years from issuance or last load, restricts inactivity, dormancy and service fees to cards inactive at least twelve months, permits one such fee monthly, and requires prominent disclosure. Airbnb US credit does not expire and carries no fees.

Pennsylvania provides that a gift certificate or gift card unredeemed for two years or more from the date of sale or issuance is redeemable in cash for its cash value, or subject to replacement at no cost. Federal law expressly preserves stronger state protections.

Pennsylvania's unclaimed property regime presumes abandonment for certificates unredeemed two years after any redemption period ends, or five years from issuance where none exists, with no-expiry no-fee products exempt.

A booking-specific caution: gift credit is not a refund mechanism. If a stay goes wrong, the resolution runs through Airbnb's own process, and outcomes may return credit rather than cash. Read the cancellation policy before booking with credit you cannot get back as money.

Two patterns matter here, and one of them overlaps directly with crypto fraud.

The off-platform booking scam. A "host" contacts you and proposes completing the booking outside Airbnb — by bank transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency — often at a discount. The listing is frequently stolen or fabricated. Once payment leaves the platform there is no protection at all. This is the single most common travel rental fraud, and cryptocurrency is increasingly the requested method precisely because it is irreversible.

The fake listing. A property that does not exist or is not available, taking deposits from multiple people. Booking and paying through the platform is the protection; a listing that pushes you off-platform is the warning sign.
